United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is extremely pleased to host as a distinguished visitor and colleague Professor Bernhard Boser of the University of California Berkeley, the newly created ATIC Professor for Semiconductor Research, funded by the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) in Abu Dhabi.

One of the main objectives of Professor Boser’s appointment is to develop a new postgraduate degree at the UAEU, a Masters of Engineering in Microprocessor Design, along similar lines as a sister program at UC Berkeley. He will be working with faculty and students from the Faculties of Engineering, Science, and Information Technology at UAEU on this and other endeavors.   Professor Boser will be at UAEU during the week of October 16 to 21 and frequently thereafter to help build the program.

In keeping with the Nation’s vision of diversifying and transforming the UAE economy, the appointment of Professor Boser marks a significant step in aligning research with the demands of new industries within the Nation. ATIC’s undertaking to inspire and support young Emirati Nationals to study in this field at UAEU and Berkeley augurs well for a diverse and secure economy and broadened employment opportunities within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and elsewhere in the UAE.

Professor Bernhard Boser was looking forward to this opportunity and said: “By establishing new graduate degree programs and research efforts in Microelectronics at UAEU and through intensifying the collaboration between UAEU and the University of California, Berkeley, I hope that my tenure will encourage more students and faculty to participate in this exciting field of work.”

Dr. Abdulla Al-Khanbashi, Vice-Chancellor of UAEU welcomed his appointment and stated, “This is another example of a Memorandum of Understanding resulting in tangible outcomes. We have been delighted to have worked in conjunction with ATIC to contribute to changing the industrial and employment landscape of Abu Dhabi and the UAE”.

Prof. Wyatt R. Hume, Provost of the UAE University, noted that this is another step in the right direction for the university demonstrating the UAEU’s commitment to remain at the forefront of the needs of the Nation. Professor Boser brings with him invaluable experience and innovation in education and research the field of microprocessor design to the benefit of both the UAEU and the Country.

Professor Boser is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley. A specialist in advanced technology his interests lie in the area of analog and mixed signal circuits, with a special emphasis on analog-digital interface circuits (ADC’s) and micromechanical sensors and actuators.
