UAEU Department of Mass Communication issues the Prestigious Al Nawa Awards
Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Mabark Al Nahyan, Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), and supported by the UAE University's Administration, represented by H.E. Dr. Abdullah Saad Al Khanbashi, the Al Nawa Award was presented to students on the 16th and 17th of January, 2012.
The Al Nawa Awards initiative by the UAEU Mass Communication Department aims to enhance students' skills and promote their creativity. The two-day event is nationwide and included industry workshops in 3D Animation, Advertisements, and Newspaper Layout; and also presented a Media Training Exhibition before culminating in the presentation of the awards.
Dr. Ali Noor Mohamed, Chair of the Department of Mass Communication, stated: We are proud of the level of talent our students have demonstrated at the annual Al Nawa Media Awards ceremony on Tuesday night. Our curriculum is now designed to emphasize practical skills in writing, artistic creativity, and photojournalism. We seek to enhance our students' professional development and growth through training in new media technologies and thus prepare them for a versatile workplace.
The Mass Communication major is a springboard to a wide variety of careers, including public relations, journalism, radio, and TV. Among the many opportunities are research, copy writing, feature writing, sports journalism, script writing, radio production, filming, public relations, and communications management.
UAEU's Mass Communication program allows students to specialize in Radio Broadcasting, TV Broadcasting, Journalism, and Public Relations and Advertising.
Dr. Al Khanbashi congratulated Ms Huda Khamis Kano, the winner of the Media Personality 2011 title, Head of Abu Dhabi Group for Culture and Arts, a Board Member Abu Dhabi Culture and Heritage Authority, and Head of the International Relations in the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation.
The Competition Results:
A total of 300 entries participated in the competition, including 122 in the photography category, 17 in press article, 11 in the caricature, 4 in websites, 30 in movies and 109 in advertisement. Dr. Kamal Hamidou, Chaiman of the Jury Committee announced the results, as follows:
1. Press article category: 1st place: Mona Ahmed Al Hamoodi, UAE University.
2nd place: Alaa Abu Sido, Sharjah University.
3rd place: Alanoud Al Muhairi, Zayed University.
2. Photography category:
1st place: Faisal Ahmed Al Raees, Higher Colleges of Technology in Dubai.
2nd place: Kholood Abdul Aziz, UAE University.
3rd place: Bilal Alantably, UAE University.
3. Caricature
1st place: Saliha Mubarak Al Harthi, Zayed University.
2nd place: Arwa Hilal Al Shehhi, UAE University.
3rd place: Maitha Al Kaabi, UAE University.
4. Advertisement
1st place: Arwa Faraj Al Saiari, UAE University.
2nd place: Sharinah bin Lootah, the American University in Sharjah.
3rd place: Ahmad Ali Abdel Rahman, Emirates College of Technology.
5. Websites
1st place: Muminah Bader Hamdoon, Sharjah University.
2nd place: Hind Ibrahim, Sharjah University.
3rd place: Aminah Yusuf / Bedoor Hasan, Sharjah University.
6. Movies
1st place: Yasser Al Niyadi, UAE University.
2nd place: Safiya Mohamed Saleh, Sharjah University.
3rd place: Mohamed Al Marri, Higher Colleges of Technology.
One of the first-place winners, Mr Faisal Ahmed, felt that the Al Nawa Award was a great opportunity for his career since he is already working as a photographer. He would like to thank UAEU for helping [talented young Emiratis] and for offering this opportunity not only to UAEU students but also to support and encourage all young people in the UAE who will try their best for this award.
