UAEU tops the Winners List of Khalifa Educational Award
The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) came at the top list of universities and educational institutions winning the Khalifa Educational Award in its 5th edition. The winners from UAEU were:
Dr. Yaser Alsaid Hawas in the category of the distinguished university professor in the field of scientific research;
Dr. Mohammed Jaber Qasem from the Faculty of Education in the category of pedagogy;
Mr. Mohammed Samier Ali from UGRU Student Development in the category of Innovative Educational programs within the UAE and throughout the Arab world.
Dr. Abdullah al Khanbashi, UAEU Vice Chancellor, emphasized the importance of the academic role played by Khalifa Educational Award in the field of education, in both University Education and General Education.
He encouraged researchers to submit their initiatives related to community issues, pointing out the directives of HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Chancellor of UAEU, who has always stressed the need for research and scientific studies of faculty members and researchers in support of the national development agenda in the UAE.
Mr.Mohammed Samier won the Innovative Educational programs with Al Madad – a Student Volunteering Tracking System.
He said: “Al Madad is a unique initiative in the field of community services in the region that measures the amount of voluntary work and integrates it in a complete electronic system. All information, files and data related to the work of community service and the number of hours of activities of each individual is documented with all details on the internet and all interested users can browse it freely.”
Al Madad has currently tracked just over 23,000 certified volunteering hours entered by around 700 individual volunteers.
This project also provides reliable and dependable data and statistics which has not been previously available such as information about the performance and individual behavior of the volunteer, and the pattern of volunteering work at UAEU, as well as the financial value of volunteering work at the university, and many other statistics.
Prof. Yaser Hawas was announced to be the recipient of the Khalifa Education Award in the Category of “Distinguished University Professor in the Field of Scientific Research”, for the year 2011-2012. He currently serves as a Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Roadway, Transportation and Traffic Safety Research Center (RTTSRC) at UAEU University. His primary areas of expertise include the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems tools for modeling and analysis, advanced control systems, traffic management and operation, development of AI algorithms for real‐time control, behavioral modeling, advanced computational tools for network optimization, planning and design, and traffic safety analysis.
He ranked first in the category of distinction in scientific research in the UAE and Arab. To qualify, applicants must submit a portfolio of all their achievements, publications, projects, and research funds.
The prestigious Khalifa Award is an annual event, and the number of applicants this year exceeded 400 people and organizations.
Thirty-one people from UAE and Arab world were selected as winners in the fields of General Education, Higher Education, Education for People with Special Needs, New Media and Education, Education and Community Service Educational Research, Projects and Innovative Educational Programmes and Educational Authoring for Children.
