UAEU Welcomes New Students

H.E. Dr. Abdullah Al Khanbashi, UAEU Vice Chancellor, welcomed 1243 male students and 2771 female students for the academic year 2012-2013.

“The United Arab Emirates University welcomes you to the beginning of a new transition in your educational journey.”

The Vice Chancellor was pleased to convey the regards and appreciation of H.H. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, UAEU Chancellor, for an academic year full of energy and industriousness.

Dr. Khanbashi emphasized on the pride of H.H. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak for the wise leadership of the United Arab Emirates, represented by H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Vice President of UAE, and their brother members of the Federal Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates, for their strong and continuous support to UAEU on all levels to fulfill its goal of being a prestigious pioneering university regionally.

The Vice Chancellor further indicated the pride and appreciation of H.H. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan for the role of H.H. the Lieutenant General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for his interest in supporting and following educational affairs at all levels and stages, and especially UAEU.

The Vice Chancellor encouraged the students to benefit from UAEU academic facilities and faculty members in addition to libraries and laboratories equipped with modern equipment.

In a personal message to the new students, Dr. Khanbashi added that their transition to this educational stage is different than the previous years – “you are a special group! Why?”

He explained: “Because international studies show that the economic investment based on knowledge is the key for future success. That’s why I want to encourage you to gain the best of these opportunities. Learning in University depends primarily on the student acquiring thinking skills, independent development and his or her effective participation.”

He also explained that extra-curricular activities go along with academic learning and help develop the student’s personality. He also emphasized on the importance of students’ awareness of the academic by-laws, and encouraged them to avail of the guidance and support, which is available to them and which will bring this cohort to become sources of the real wealth of this country: knowledge.

Inspired by the Vice Chancellor’s speech, UAEU students performed an Operetta, “UAEU is My Second Home”, which was organized by the Deanship of Students and Department of Students Hostel and performed by students. Musical scenes representing the different educational stages of the student till the university very ably underlined the Vice Chancellor’s message.

Following the formal Welcome Ceremony, as part of an extended orientation to university transition, the new students will participate in a university-wide 8-hour New Student Experience, which will encompass every aspect of the university life. UGRU Instructors as well as staff members will participate in the various activities that students will be engaged in. The focus will be on accessing, inquiry, thinking, and exploration.

Following the Peer Assistance Learning model (PAL), the new students will also be guided by senior students in a wide variety of developmental activities including university preparation workshops on the topics of Choosing Your Major, and Accessing E-Services.

"We recruit, train, and mentor senior students to offer this invaluable service to new students", said Abdus Sabur Muhammad, event coordinator.  "PAL is a proven system to provide both instruction and guidance for newly admitted students".
