Chemistry was benchmarked with various highly
recognized US universities such as University of
Michigan, and University of California at Berkeley.
Mathematics was benchmarked with the University
of Colorado, University of Maryland, University of
Pittsburgh, Purdue University, and University of
California at Los Angeles. Physics was compared
to other distinguished regional and international
universities such as KFUPM, SQU, University of
Delaware, University of Colorado, and University
of Alabama. Geology was benchmarked with the
University of Colorado, University of Southern
Illinois, and University of Calgary, while Biology
was benchmarked with Stony Brook University,
University of California at Berkeley, University of
Illinois, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Auburn
University.
Undergraduate Math Placement
With the successful pilot of the COMPASS-Math
test in UGRU for the past two years, UAEU has
adopted the test for preparatory Math placement
and exemption. COMPASS-Math already enabled
an increasing number of students to prove they have
the Math skills necessary to directly enter Faculty
courses. Preparatory Math studies are modularized
into 8-week sessions targeting specific Algebra,
Faculty Algebra and Trigonometry deficiencies to
accelerate progress in preparatory Math and enable
students to enroll in Faculty Math and Statistics
courses more quickly.
Student Achievements and Successes
For the second year in a row the female students
from the Faculty of Food and Agriculture (FFA) won
the Inter-Faculty Cultural Cup 2010. The 2011 Inter-
Faculty Challenge saw the female students from FOS
winning, while the male competition was won by the
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS)
students.
Two Mechanical Engineering senior projects won
prizes at the GCC Student Design competition; 1st
prize went to the design of a system to study and
control the drag impact on moving vehicles and
3rd prize went to a self-maintained system for the
production of diesel from algae.
Engineering students, for the second year, won the
Ethics Competition organized by Khalifa University,
while the UAEU Chemical Engineering students won
the AICHE Abu Dhabi Section Quiz Competition.
An Electrical Engineering student in the FOE won the
Hamdan Bin Rashed Award for College students and
was one of the first Emirati students selected for a
summer Internship at NASA Ames research lab.
UAEU students came first in the First UAE Festival for
Universities Theatrical Performances in Sharjah, and
came third in the First International University Arabic
Debate Championship in Qatar.
Student Enrichment
Students from FBE formed the first student council
and initiated a number of projects including a FBE
promotion and recruitment video and the TEDx
program with the Al Ain Municipality.
Eleven German female students from Osnabrück
University of Science & Technology, Germany, spent
10 days in the Department of Food Science in FFA
on exchange, while six female students and five
male students were sent by FFA to the UK and New
Zealand respectively for 8 weeks to study English,
strengthening their language skills in grammar,
writing, reading, and speaking.
Within the FHSS, the Departments of English
Literature and History, Archaeology, and Tourism
co-supervised a student delegation to the Harvard
World Model United Nations in Singapore, giving the
students an excellent opportunity to showcase their
critical thinking and presentation skills. TheGeography
and Urban Planning Department collaborated with
National Geographic Al Arabiya to host a photography
gallery and competition, while the History, Archeology,
and Tourism Department founded a new club, the
Heritage Club. Students in Public Relations launched
the first chapter of PRESS (Public Relations Emirates
