The Centre completed the following research projects which were funded by the Global Health Grants:
‘Developing Countries Partnership for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention’ and ‘Sharing Knowledge
and Building Capacity for Excellence in Global Mental Health through Respectable Partnership’.
- Meetings, Workshops & Lectures
Zayed Centre for Health Sciences and UAEU cohosted the 7th Malaria Elimination Group’s meeting
held in Al Ain in December 2012. Participants included senior representatives of malaria programs
from countries including the UAE, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the Islamic
Republic of Iran and the World Health Organization.
The Centre also hosted a series of lectures by distinguished international speakers including:
‘Contemporary Issues in Global Public Health: Accreditation: Challenges and Opportunities’ by Dr.
Helen Marshak, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Loma Linda University, California; ‘Shrinking
the Malaria Map’ by Professor Sir Richard Feachem, Director of Global Health Group, UCSF Global
Health Sciences, California; and ‘Occupational Violence in the Healthcare Sector’ by Dr. Mohamad
Alameddine, Department of Health Management and Policy, American University of Beirut, Lebanon.
National Water Center
The University Council at UAEU approved the establishment of the ‘National Water Center’ to be
operated by the College of Science following a call by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan
– Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi who said, “Water is more vital than Oil”. The National Water Center is a
Center of applied research and technology. Its mission is to work in collaboration with UAE, regional
and international partners to bridge the gap between water requirements and water availability in arid
and semi-arid regions by conducting scientific research and by developing and implementing improved
technologies for monitoring, management, treatment and desalination. The center recently purchased
a Geoprobe device, which is the latest development device in sampling water and soil.
Center for Public Policy and Leadership
UAEU established the ‘Emirates University Center for Public Policy and Leadership’ to create
sustainable partnerships with different public institutions and to provide specialized support in the
areas of leadership, policy design, policy implementation and policy evaluation. It also aims to offer
best practices and innovative approaches in dealing with the various challenges facing the United Arab
Emirates, as well as becoming a key partner in excellence and innovation in public policy, governance,
and leadership.
