Reflecting on the thirty-sixth year of the service provided to the Nation by the United Arab Emirates
University (UAEU), it is with pride that the University acknowledges the accomplishments in this year’s
ongoing growth and development of the UAEU, the nation’s first and oldest National University.
UAEU continued to prosper this year, making a significant contribution to the development of the nation
through its research agendas and thus becoming a research institute of excellence of both national and
international significance. The explosion of industrial and institutional research initiatives, the founding
of two new research centers - the National Water Center and the UAEU Center for Public Policy and
Leadership, the filing of many patents for innovations, the millions of dirhams in funded grants, and the
flow of scholarly articles confirm that the UAEU is the ‘Nation’s Research Engine: Creating Knowledge
and Building Human Capacity’.
As a result of our success, UAEU continues to be ranked in the top 500 QS World University Rankings.
In addition to this UAEU was the only university in the UAE to make the top 100 Times Higher Education
Asia University Rankings. As a National institution, all of the UAEU’s degree programs are accredited by
the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research with Colleges pursuing and obtaining optional
specialized accreditation from various international bodies. This year, international recognition was
received by the Colleges of Food & Agriculture, and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The responsibility of developing the nation’s human capital and developing new knowledge lies squarely
on the shoulders of the University. The heart of the University’s role in society is to assure that the
human resources are available and that the continued prosperity and future growth of the Nation is
nurtured and fully developed. The University is proud to have 169 Emirati National faculty, representing
almost 23% of all faculty, and over 43% of staff positions being Emirati Nationals.
Our responsibility includes the development of our communities as well as our own staff and students.
In 2012/2013 we have seen a phenomenal rate of professional development and training, in Continuing
Education, in serving students with special needs, in reaching out to high schools, and in our work with
over 56,000 UAEU alumni.
As the UAEU transformation program matured during the past year, some significant changes in
leadership of the University occurred, with H.E. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of
Higher Education and Scientific Research appointed as Chancellor of UAEU and H.E. Dr. Ali Rashid Al
Noaimi being appointed as Vice Chancellor.
The lifeblood of any university is its students and the UAEU is no exception, as it focuses on improving
the caliber and capabilities of students. Campus life provides students with many opportunities to
learn, experiment, grow, and develop, all in a safe, secure and nurturing environment. The UAEU is in a
unique position in having more than 50% of our students in residence, providing a great opportunity
for enhancing the whole university experience. Our students have responded well, winning local and
international awards, travelling internationally and locally, participating in numerous social clubs and
activities, and reaching out to those less fortunate than themselves through both volunteering and
fundraising, in particular making substantial donations to the Al Ain based Red Crescent charity.
