The Department of Geography and Urban Planning in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) recently organized an exhibition on information systems and smart cities. This exhibition was held on the new campus in Al Ain in the impressive crescent building theater. The opening ceremony was attended by His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Al Baili, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Provost), Professor Saif Al Qaydi, the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Dr. Khaula Al Kaabi, the Chair of the Department of Geography and Urban Planning. There were also many students and faculty in attendance.

Dr. Al Baili stressed that the exhibition focused on the importance of smart cities and that this opportunity allowed the latest student projects regarding urban growth and smart development (including those utilizing GIS techniques) to be showcased. The organizers and students displayed modern, smart town planning principles and other innovations. They also demonstrated the ability to solve many problems associated with urban planning and make use of information and communication technology skills.

Dr. Al Baili praised the organization of the exhibition and thanked the sponsors and other partners who participated in, and contributed to, the success of this important urban and geographical exhibition. He also called on students to provide even more innovative ideas and projects to provide solutions compatible with a modern lifestyle.

Dr. Al Qaydi, the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, thanked all the participants. This list included the government of Ras Al Khaimah, the Al Ain Municipality, the Abu Dhabi Municipality, GISTEC and the Emirates Advanced Investments Group. He also announced the best three student research projects. Asmaa Al Mazrouei, Khoulood Ahmad and Fatima Al Hammadi were in first place for their research on a smart cable-car, designed to attract tourists to Ras Al Khaimah; while Khawla Al Habsi and Aisha Mubarak came in second with their project on intelligent planning systems and how they can enhance traffic safety around busy school districts. The third place prize was awarded to Hamdan Al-Harthy and Khaled Al Bloushi for their work looking into the current challenges facing Al Ain International Airport.

Dr. Al Qaydi added that the performance and convenience of any urban environment now depends not only on infrastructure, but also on the availability and quality of knowledge and communications. Therefore, the concept of a smart city is a strategic tool that needs to include many factors affecting modern urban living spaces, in a common framework, in order to strengthen information and communication technologies; social and environmental capital and the development of competitiveness in, and between, these cities.

In addition to students from the Department of Geography, students from the College of Engineering and the College of Business and Economics participated in the exhibition by presenting projects regarding intelligent city management and environmentally friendly buildings.
