United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) - Top Universities in Middle East
  • First PHD

The first defense of a Ph.D in Civil Engineering at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) was held on Wednesday, May 21st. Faisal Abdul Quddus presented his dissertation, completed under the supervision of Professor Yaser E. Hawas, on the ‘Development of an Integrated Incident and Transit Priority Management Control System’. The examination committee was made up of Professor Peter Martin from New Mexico State University and Drs. Kamran Ahmed and Younes Hamdouch both from UAEU.

The aim of this dissertation is to develop a distributed adaptive control system. This system works as a stand-alone solution for single intersections handling a variety of boundary conditions during recurrent or non-recurrent congestion. It also gives transit signal priority and eases downstream blockage during various traffic phases in order to improve overall network productivity and efficiency.

The control system uses the data from link detectors to determine the boundary conditions for all incoming and exit routes. The system includes four processes: The traffic regime state which estimates the congestion status of the link; the incident statusthat determines the likelihood of an incident on the link; transit priority where the link is flagged for transit priority based on transit vehicle location and type, and a downstream blockage module that scans all downstream links and determines their recurrent blockage conditions.

The control decisions of this logic showed a significant improvement in productivity compared to existing signal control systems in medium to heavily congested traffic demand conditions for different types of networks. In addition, more efficiency was achieved for relatively low to heavy traffic demand conditions.

The best performing phase settings for the signal control were investigated thoroughly. The signal control logic was then extended to pre-timed signal phase settings to assess if an increase in productivity for heavily congested scenarios in closely spaced urban networks was possible. It was ascertained that the performance of the pre-timed control signal was significant.

Faisal successfully passed his defense and Professor Amr El Dieb, Dean of Engineering, recommended him for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree. It is worth noting that the college emphasizes the importance of the outcomes of such research to the needs of the UAE. This dissertation and defense is the first tangible result of the College of Engineering’s Ph.D program, established four years ago at UAEU.
