The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) launched its Summer Research Experience (SURE) initiative for the second successive year. The aim of the initiative is to encourage and support the integration and interaction of undergraduate students in practical research experiences through training them in research methods. They do so by working within other teams of undergraduate and graduate students under the supervision of distinguished faculty members. The research projects cover several different fields of interest that are of scientific interest and are focused on at UAEU.

The initiative was launched by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mubarak Al Nahayan in 2013 and focuses on finding actual scientific solutions to practical, real life problems. This is done through adopting certain research approaches and documenting and delivering those results and/or solutions within a set timeframe (July 1st to August 31st, 2014). Therefore, the implementation of the project takes a maximum of five weeks and final reports are to be delivered by the beginning of September, 2014.

Dr. Ali Rashid Al Noaimi emphasized the role of the initiative in attracting new students, deepening the culture of scientific research and motivating students to choose scientific research during their studies. This enables them to prepare for further research and promotes the concepts and principles of scientific research. This is a strategic direction focusing on scientific and educational processes upon which UAEU has embarked with the aim of refining research skills and training students for scientific  research.

Prof. Reyadh Almehaideb, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, commended the participants for their responsible approach to these scientific research activities, their continuous quest for innovation: characteristics which he considers bodes well for the future of scientific research in the UAE. He reiterated that 22 research projects were completed in 2013 alone. He also clarified that research is of vital importance to the wider community and that research symbolizes innovation and provides challenges from which scientific discoveries often emerge. This, he added, characterizes academic life and helps to develop a truly innovative national research system.

82 students (male and female) working on 20 research project teams were represented this year. 66 are undergraduates, while the remaining 16 were all graduate students.
