As part of World Sight Day, the Department of Special Education in the College of Education at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) recently organized a lecture under the title, “The challenges faced by people with disabilities and how to overcome them.” This lecture was held in collaboration with the Al Ain Centre for Care and Rehabilitation. It was presented by Mr. Mohamed Allokah, a coach and lecturer at the Al Ain Centre for Care and Rehabilitation, to a group of female students and also faculty from the Department of Special Education.

Dr. Osha Al Muhairy, Chair of the Department of Special Education, added that World Sight Day is often referred to as ‘White Cane Day.’ This day is an expression of support for those without sight. The UAE attaches great importance to the lives of people with special needs and provides specialized centers equipped with the latest technology and methods to help disabled people lead rich and full social lives.

Dr. Al Muhairy stressed that UAEU, as an academic institution, embraces, supports and provides many services for people with special needs. The University has a Special Education Department and a center for special needs, both of which provide everything necessary to facilitate the integration of special needs students into society.

Mr. Mohamed Allokah explained the importance of using a white cane, its different uses, how they are used by the blind and the history and development of this important tool. He also explained the cooperation between Al Ain Centre for Care and Rehabilitation and UAEU in conducting projects and research into facilitating a normal life for special needs groups. This includes the latest developments in the white cane that is now equipped with a vibrating sensor that protects the blind in case of any dangerous obstacles in front of them. He also described a helmet to protect the head in the event of a fall.
