Mon, 6 June 2022
The Special Education Department in the College of Education at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) recently organized a training workshop (called the Creativity Café). The workshop was aimed at stimulating creativity, innovation, teamwork, effective communication, integrity and transparency. Mr. Yousef Al Hammadi, a self-development expert, lead the training session.
He addressed the concept of innovation in terms of one’s ability to generate new and unique ideas. In addition he described the qualities and attributes of creative people. These qualities included determination, an ability to reduce stress, being a good listener, a willingness to learn, flexibility, collaboration and being inquisitive. Mr. Al Hammadi further outlined a range of positive factors which he said could not be identified if one were pessimistic or negative.
He exemplified this creativity by highlighting ‘Flashes of Thought’, a book by his Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. This volume contains innovative and creative ideas that can encourage young people to set realistic goals and not to pay attention to those who would hold them back or discourage them.
Mr. Al Hammadi assessed the students creativity via a variety of exercises aimed at measuring the creative capacity of individuals. He stressed maintaining a creative outlook by remaining positive and he also identified different types of innovation (e.g. art and fantasy). Finally, he discussed the personal and external constraints to creativity as well as the environment that may surround individuals and how they could overcome any obstacles in the way.
Dr. Ousha Al Muhairi, the Head of the Special Education Department in the College of Education, mentioned that this workshop was part of a series of programs, courses and workshops that aim to train students in leadership skills and to motivate them to make a positive contribution to the future progress of the UAE.
