The Department of Mass Communications in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the United Arab Emirates University organized a panel discussion entitled, ‘Media research and inequality: why we need the media for social justice,’ on Tuesday 8th of December 2015, on the Al Ain campus.
The seminar was presented by Dr. Ayo Oyeleye, an assistant professor in the Department of Mass Communications, and was aimed at developing research and intellectual skills by means of holding an open discussion regarding media research developments. Dr. Oyeleye talked about the link between the media and social justice and the challenge of achieving social justice and inequality. This is a sensitive issue. He added that, “the issue of rising income inequality is paramount. According to Oxfam by 2016 1% of the world's population will have more wealth than the other 99%.” He explained the moral duty of media to report on such injustice and how the media can help to realize social justice and deal with this global crisis.
