The Department of Life Sciences in the College of Sciences at the United Arab Emirates University organized a lecture to raise awareness of single origin diabetes. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Ante Gesang of the University of Copenhagen to a group of faculty and students on Sunday 15^th February at the main College of Sciences on the Al Ain campus.

This lecture was aimed at educating students about the seriousness of this disease; how to combat it and modern treatments that are available around the world. This is part of the university’s role to help in the transfer of knowledge and skills to the wider community through cooperation with other relevant organizations.

Dr. Ante spoke about the types of diabetes that affect large numbers of people in the UAE. She called for raising public awareness of the risks of this and other forms of diabetes and discussed how to avoid these health dangers by increasing exercise and maintaining a healthy diet.

She explained that in the past 50 years diabetes has increased in step with an increase in obesity levels, which is another problem besetting modern society. To fight against these diseases we should follow a healthy lifestyle and eat a balanced diet, all of which has been proven to be effective in preventing diabetes.
