Students in the College of Engineering at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) submitted their graduation projects over two consecutive days on the 14^th and 15^th of January. The 271 students on the Integrated Design Course presented 73 projects in total. This course is taught over two consecutive semesters making up a total of 6 credit hours in the final year of their academic program.

Dr. Nabil Bastaki, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, said that, “The course is a practical preparation for future engineers. It aims to give students a realistic design experience by making use of the basic scientific skills they have acquired during their years of study in designing modern products, producing new devices or developing existing operations.”

Dr. Bastaki added that, “the students are always looking to find research solutions in strategic areas, which is why they are developing their research capacities and innovating in areas of national importance.” He continued that it was, “well known that industry sponsored projects handle real issues and offer real challenges, which can lead to real benefits for businesses, as well as for students and faculty.”

The strategic partners benefit from the students’ work. Students spend 270 working hours with these partners and improve their scientific and research vision in areas of industrial importance. This increases the opportunities for students to find work with these companies. Additionally, the students contribute to landmark projects such as automatic solar power for the Gulf, designing a walking aid for the blind, the layout of a green energy health clinic for residential complexes, an underground public library that consumes very little energy and other leading projects.
