A group of female students from the United Arab Emirates University presented a display entitled “Be Aware” as part of the Dubai Customs Award for Intellectual Property Rights. This display, organized by the female branch of the Student Activities Department, is part of the Mayar initiative to encourage female students to participate in the award.

The display was inaugurated by Mrs. Khadija Al Naqbi, Head of the Student Affairs Deanship at UAEU on the morning of Tuesday, 17^th March 2015 in the College of Information Technology. The inauguration was carried out in the presence of administrators, academics and students. Mrs. Al Naqbi toured the exhibits which addressed various topics related to intellectual property protection and methods of familiarizing the public with their rights in this area. She also urged students to participate as this will help to enhance their cognitive abilities.

She thanked the various government authorities who participated, including: the Ministry of the Economy, the Department of Economic Development, Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, Dubai Customs and the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority. Their participation helped to make the event a success and contributed to building communications between these authorities and UAEU students. This helps to also promote the university’s vision of supporting students at both theoretical and practical levels in order to produce graduates able to communicate with the institutions that can bring about positive changes in UAE’s immediate and longer term future.

The organizing committee of students believed that this initiative contributes in educating individuals on the one hand, and to the preparation of a much more aware generation on the other hand: a generation who seek to strengthen community, volunteer and inculcate cooperative values that can enrich the entire community. In addition to introducing the role of Dubai Customs in the protection of intellectual property it also helps to prevent potential customers from falling victim to fraud.

UAEU students are keen to participate every year in the award, because this kind of participation reinforces the value of effective community participation. As intellectual property has become a concern for these students they now aspire to spread this knowledge amongst the community. This innovative approach also encourages students to volunteer to serve the nation.
