The Department of Special Education in the College of Education at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), in cooperation with the UAE Deaf Association, organized a play entitled “Message from a Deaf Person” recently. The play was performed at the Multaqa Theatre in Al Ain on the morning of Sunday 26th 2015 in the presence of His Excellency Mohamed Fadel Al Hameli, Secretary General of the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs; Dr. Ousha Al Muhairi, Chair of the Special Education Department, members of the Board of Directors of the UAE Deaf Association and students.

His Excellency Mohamed Fadel Al Hameli said that his organization, in collaboration with other bodies such as UAEU, seeks to discuss issues of importance for the deaf, identify their abilities, means of rehabilitation and treat them as individuals whose positive energies are of value in the national labor market.

He added that the participation of three deaf people in the play helps to highlight the status of deaf people in the community, to facilitate integration and strengthen communication between the deaf and other individuals in various walks of life.

Dr. Al Muhairi added that this event is part of the vision of UAEU to communicate with various elements in society. It is the objective of the university to promote cooperation between educational institutions and civil society in order to disseminate a culture of tolerance and acceptance. She also said that the university is always seeking to enhance its humanitarian role.

She went on to point out that the play discusses important issues in time for the 40th Arab Deaf Week (in conjunction with the International Week of the Deaf). This is done by highlighting the voices of deaf people and by raising awareness of their issues. The difficulties faced by the deaf were also addressed, including integration in government schools, the difficulty of coping with other students, the high cost of video calls for communicative purposes and other health problems.
