The Department of Geography and Urban Planning in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the United Arab Emirates University, organized a lecture on the ‘Geomorphology of the Anthropocene period’ on Tuesday, November 10th, 2015, on the female campus. This lecture highlighted the direct and indirect impact of humans, whether intentionally or not, on the Earth.

Professor Michael Meadows, Secretary-General and Treasurer of the International Geographical Union, delivered the lecture. He briefly reviewed various causes of change in the shape of the Earth and explored the effects of humans on different environments. This was to put the Anthropocene Era into perspective. He then looked at three case studies on the impact of increasingly sophisticated human techniques on the geomorphology of many environments.

Professor Meadows stressed that the problems of accelerated soil erosion, and the impact of large dam projects and land use, are examples that highlight the important role played by geomorphology in understanding human prosperity. He added that the Quaternary Period provides a basic understanding of the Earth and can facilitate an evaluation of global climate change in the past, and its future effects.
