The Department of Translation Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the United Arab Emirates University organized a workshop called ‘Translation of Names’, on Sunday, November 15th, 2015, on the female campus. The workshop addressed the difficulties that a translator faces when dealing with different kinds of names. This is part of the university’s role in transferring skills and knowledge to students.
Dr. Hala Sharkas, Chair of the Translation Studies Department, identified different types of names, such as the personal names, the names of historical, religious, mythological, literary or fictional characters, the names of international and national organizations, public and private institutions, trademarks, and geographical and topographical names. She also identified the difficulties in translating these names and then clarified the methods used to overcome these difficulties in light of the requirements of text type and the needs of the reader.
The students analyzed authentic texts with translations and discussed the methods used by the translator to deal with different types of names in the texts. This included phonetic translation, translation of the meaning, the use of internationally recognized names, or marking some phonetically translated names with their distinct qualities.
The workshop provided the participants with websites that search for the internationally approved names of countries and worldwide organizations.
