The ‘Watani Al Emarat Club’ at the United Arab Emirates University, in cooperation with the ‘Watani Al Emarat’ Foundation organized an ‘Electronic Blackmail’ seminar on Monday, October 12th, 2015 in the theater of the College of Information Technology at UAEU.

The members and students stood for a minute’s silence to honor the martyrs from the UAE armed forces, who gave their lives in service of their country. This was an expression of the solidarity of the people of the UAE and the leadership who support the bravery of the UAE army during the military campaign, as part of the Arab coalition in Yemen.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dherar Belhoul, Director General of the ‘Watani Al Emarat’ Foundation, reviewed some of the ways blackmailers reach their victims, and how to prevent blackmail. He talked about how to cope with electronic blackmail: first you should not publish any personal information on networking sites as it might be used by blackmailers to implicate you. You should not deal with anonymous letters or activate an automatic review of messages. He pointed out that when we open unknown files we might also expect that they contain viruses that can enable others to open our mobile devices and steal information. Then, he talked about email fraud, most notably electronic messages that claim to offer an award, a request for assistance and other attempts to penetrate our accounts.

Khalil Al Ali, an advisor at the ‘Al Ameen’ Service of the General Command of the Dubai Police, noted that we need to be aware of any special conditions for a social networking site before entering it. He added that the ‘Al Ameen’ Service has dealt with and resolved many cases of electronic blackmail, and pointed out that there are recent statistics that illustrate the extent of children's exposure to electronic blackmail. He also noted that the first practical steps to blackmail are made by entering the private conversations of the victim, studying these conversations and choosing something that could pose a threat to the reputation, security and integrity of the victim.

Ghaith Al Mazina from the ‘Telecommunications Regulatory Authority’ (TRA) concluded the seminar by talking about the role of the TRA in raising awareness of electronic blackmail through organized seminars and lectures. He explained that those exposed to electronic blackmail could go to the TRA to report the case, noting that the organization deals with such reports confidentially. He recommended educating parents and children in order to prevent them from falling victim to electronic blackmail.
