The United Arab Emirates University hosted the Higher Education Sports Federation Championship for Taekwondo on Tuesday, March 1st, 2016. It was organized by the Sports Activities Unit. Dr. Ali Al Kaabi, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment, Student Activities Department staff, Sports Activities Unit staff and a large number of students all attended the event.
Dr. Al Kaabi said that, “This Championship aims to spread sports to the students and discover emerging talent. This is a comparatively new sport in the UAE.” He stressed that the Higher Education Sports Federation Championships aim to hone talent and allow students to take part in Taekwondo. This is part of the university’s role to provide challenging opportunities.
Teams participating included: the United Arab Emirates University; the University of Sharjah; Dubai Police Academy and Ajman University. The UAEU team won three gold medals, three silvers and a bronze. They had a total score of 51 points and came first overall.
The University of Sharjah were second with a total score of 39 points while the Dubai Police Academy came third with 36 points. The UAEU team was first in every weight category from 54 - 87 kg.
Abdullah Al-Mansouri, Ahmad Muammar Bin Krodah and Mohammed Abdullah Mohammed won gold medals; Ghanem Humaid Al Kalbani, Ahmed Mohammed Mazen and Mohammad Reda Turkman won silver while Obada As’ad won a bronze medal. The tournament was refereed by a team from the UAE Taekwondo Federation.
Ibrahim Mukhtar Ahmed, Head of the Mlae Sports Activities Uni said that, “the University has demonstrated good administrative and organizational ability in hosting this important Championship.” He thanked Dr.Al Kaabi for providing financial and moral support. He also thanked coach Adnan Bokheimah and coordinator Mohsen Abdel Azim for their outstanding efforts in organizing the championship and training the competitors. He also thanked the Higher Education Sports Federation and the UAE Taekwondo Federation for providing the championship with equipment and international referees in order to ensure the success of this event.
