The College of Science at United Arab Emirates University organized a student brainstorming session, entitled "Reading and Innovation", which comes within the College's initiatives in support of reading, in the presence of Dr. Ahmad Murad, Dean of the College of Science, Dr. Asma Al Manhali, Deputy Dean, Dr. Ruwaya Alkendi, Assistant Dean for Research and Graduate Studies and college students.
The session discussed several topics about reading and its relationship to innovation, and innovative ways to attract students towards libraries. To draw students’ attention to the importance of reading, some students suggested organizing reading events and the establishment in the Colleges of small libraries that serve as classrooms. This would enhance student affiliation towards the department as well as increasing students’ relationships with books. Students also proposed regular meetings between senior officials at the University and the students in the University Library to discuss different topics, to enhance student links to libraries and indirectly promote reading. The session addressed the effect of the amount of reading on the level of innovation, the relationship between reading and the quality of the same, and presented models of innovators who had been positively affected by reading.
A group of students from different departments of the College of Science participated in the session agreed that reading a lot of high quality books greatly raises the level of the reader and that exposure to problems calls for student to read topics from different sciences to reach innovative solutions to problems.
