As part of a series of lectures on innovation,
On Sunday, October 9, 2016, the College of Science and the Research and Graduate Studies Sector held a lecture on the "Physics of Flight", as part of a series of lectures on innovation. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Roger Freedman, a lecturer at the University of California, and was attended both by faculty members and students.
Professor Ghaleb Al Hadrami, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, pointed out that the event was in line with the "National Innovation Strategy" launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. Professor Al Hadrani stressed that the National Innovation Strategy aims to make the UAE among the most innovative countries in the world, and that this series of lectures is part of an effort to build national talent in the field of scientific and technological innovation. It will also promote an exchange of expertise with specialists in all fields between countries.
Prof. Freedman presented some main ideas about aerodynamics during the lecture, and clarified some common misconceptions of aviation. He also described a flight made by an F-16 fighter jet, as part of an experiment in aerodynamics.
Prof. Freedman studied at the Department of Physics and also at the College of Creative Studies, and has undertaken significant research in nuclear physics, elementary particles, and laser physics. He has also delivered lectures through interactive means, by utilizing the latest technology, and obtained a license to fly commercial aircraft.
