Using the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS), the aim of this course is to introduce students to the conventions and discourse of academic English with respect to reading, writing, and conducting research. Academic language skills are developed through reading disciplinary academic texts, reviewing examples of model essays, paraphrasing, and the writing of short academic essays based on research. Beginning information literacy skills are also developed with an introduction to identifying, gathering, assessing, and synthesizing research for a short academic presentation. The correct use of APA 6th Edition citation style is also taught and used throughout.
Prerequisite for all courses: EmSAT 1100, ENGU 1404, IELTS 5, CEPA 180, TOEFL 500, IB TOEFL 62
ESPU 103: English for the College of Education (CEDU)
The aim of this mobile-learning enhanced course is to introduce students to academic reading, writing, and oral communication skills for further study in the College of Education. Academic reading, outlining, and writing skills are developed through the study of academic texts in the field of education. Paraphrasing techniques and the structure of essays based on research will be taught for descriptive writing. Educational case studies will be analyzed leading to the composition of a problem, solution, and evaluation report.
Academic oral communication skills are also developed with particular reference to the effective preparation and delivery of an academic presentation on contemporary educational approaches. In addition, students will learn how to analyze their learning through reflective writing assignments. Throughout the course, the correct use of APA 6th Edition citation and referencing for research paper writing, PowerPoint, and other visuals is also taught.

ESPU 104: English for the College of Business & Economics (CBE)
3 Credit Hours
Using the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS), the aim of this course is to introduce students to academic reading, writing, research and oral communication skills for further study in the College of Business and Economics. These skills are developed through the study of business oriented topics and disciplinary texts. Academic writing techniques are taught to help students develop essays based on research for analytical reports, proposal writing, and investigative reports. Business e-mail writing is also covered to promote the basics of professional e-mail communication.
Academic oral communication skills are developed by students conducting market research and presenting their findings. Throughout the course, the correct use of APA 6th Edition citation and referencing for research paper writing and PowerPoint is also taught.

ESPU 1052: English for Law
3 Credit Hours
Using the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS), this course aims to help students understand the various divisions in law and areas of specialization. It also focuses on legal contracts, basic business law, UAE Labour Law, intellectual property, and the use of relevant English legal terminology for these topics. Throughout the course, students build up their academic research skills, reading and writing skills and their legal vocabulary. Students read and write legal contracts and law-related documents, including business contracts and research reports.

ESPU 1472: English for Law 2
3 Credit Hours
Using the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS), this course improves specific legal communication skills developed in ESPU 1052 for students majoring in UAEU’s College of Law. Through regular use of business-law scenarios, students advance their ability to communicate effectively with respect to business types, advanced business contracts, negotiable instruments, UAE Labour Law and intellectual property. Students increase their comprehension of legal terminology through client and attorney dialogs, advanced business agreements, and readings on legal issues. Students also improve their academic researching, reading, and writing skills by producing business contracts and law-related documents such as legal case summaries and research reports.
Prerequisite: ESPU 1052
COMS 230: Communication Skills for Education 2
3 Credit Hours
This mobile-learning enhanced course is designed to increase future teachers’ confidence and effectiveness in communicating in spoken English. The major focus is on developing the key presentation skills a successful presenter or teacher needs. These skills include producing the authentic sounds and rhythms of spoken English and using visual aids correctly. Students will learn how to do honest and authentic action research, as well as academic research. They will also complete reflective writing tasks to develop critical thinking and self-evaluation skills and to improve their written communication in English.
This is an active course with an emphasis on student participation in discussions and teamwork based projects. Although much of the work is collaborative, students are assessed only on their individual performances.

ESPU 1462: Communication Skills for Humanities & Social Sciences 2
3 Credit Hours
This mobile-learning enhanced course is designed to develop and improve skills and competencies in English communication. It focuses on improving speaking and associated non-verbal skills with particular reference to the design, preparation and delivery of college-appropriate presentations. These skills include producing the authentic sounds and rhythms of spoken English and using visual aids correctly. The course also promotes collaborative learning, critical thinking and a scholarly and ethical approach to research. Students also complete reflective writing tasks to develop self-evaluation skills and to improve their written communication in English.
This is an active course with an emphasis on student participation in discussions and teamwork-based projects. Although much of the work is collaborative, students are primarily assessed only on their individual performances.

ESPU 1082: English for Information Technology 2

This mobile-learning enhanced course aims to improve student proficiency in writing well-organized, accurate academic essays and presenting information to an audience. The course is organized around IT themes that lead to contrastive essay writing. Emphasis is placed on organizing and developing ideas, reading for information, paraphrasing, referencing, synthesis, structural complexity, as well as grammatical and mechanical accuracy. The course’s capstone project focuses on improving speaking and associated non-verbal skills with particular reference to the design, preparation and delivery of IT presentations for an audience of IT professionals.

ESPU 240: Professional Skills & Business Writing in English 3
3 Credit Hours
The aims of this course are two-fold: the development of both professional writing and presentation skills for business. Workplace writing, specifically the improvement of business etiquette, audience appropriate language and content will be targeted as well as academic writing with a focus on research, referencing and citations. Professional presentation skills that focus on content appropriateness, organization, media choice and effective delivery will also be covered.
Prerequisite: ESPU 104 / COMS 235 / GEIL 101
