Lord Ajay Kakkar is Professor of Surgery, University College London, and Director of the Thrombosis Research Institute. He is Chairman of UCL Partners Academic Health Science Partnership, the King’s Fund and UK Biobank.
Lord Kakkar completed his medical degree at King’s College Hospital Medical School and received his PhD from Imperial College London. His research interests include the prevention and treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolic disease and cancer associated thrombosis.
Lord Kakkar is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and the Royal College of Physicians (London). He has Honorary Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Association of Surgeons of India and Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford. He is an Honorary Bencher of the Most Honourable Society of Middle Temple.
Lord Kakkar was created a Life Peer in 2010 and sits on the cross benches of the House of Lords. He was Chairman of the House of Lords Appointments Commission from 2013–2018. He is Chairman of the Judicial Appointments Commission and was appointed a member of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council in 2014.
He served as the Prime Minister’s Business Ambassador for Healthcare and Life Sciences from 2012-2018 and is a member of the UAE-UK Business Council, co-chairing its bilateral working group for health.
