Tariq Yaqoob Alhashmi

Tariq AlHashmi is the Head of Technology Adoption in the newly established Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT). Within his role, Tariq is leading the efforts to increase the level of adoption of advanced technology within the UAE based industries. His section is responsible for a portfolio of programs and initiatives around industry 4.0 adoption and workforce transformation to improve the competitiveness of the UAE’s manufacturing industries. Prior to joining the Ministry, Tariq occupied several roles in the nuclear industry for more than 7 years. Tariq holds a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University.

 Prof. Taieb Znati,

Prof. Taieb Znati

Dr. Znati is current Dean of CIT at the UAE. Prior to joining UAEU, he was a Professor and Chair of the CS Department at the University of Pittsburgh. He also served as the Director of the Computer and Network Systems Division at the National Science Foundation. In 2004, he led the Information Technology Research Initiative (ITR), focused on the design and engineering of resilient and reliable software architectures for large-scale systems. He also served as a Senior Program Director in the NSF/ANIR Division.  Dr. Znati's current research interests are in cloud and data-intensive computing, ubiquitous and pervasive computing, and energy-aware resiliency models for extreme-scale systems. He published over 90 journal papers, 175 referred conference papers, and several books on networked systems and network protocols.

Dr. Znati served as the General Chair and Chair of several main conferences, including ICDCS 2019, GlobeCom 2010, and INFOCOM 2005. He was the co-founder and General Chair of SECON 2004.  He served or currently serves as a member of Editorial Boards. He also served on the Science Foundation Ireland Board, and Co-Chaired the Network and Information Research and Development (NITRD) for Large Scale Networking.

He was member of the Internet2 Research Advisory Council for Developing Strategies for Research. He also served as the Chair of the Committee of Visitors of the Advanced Networking Program of the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) of the United States Department of Energy.

Chafik Bouhaddioui

Dr. Chafik Bouhaddioui is an Associate Professor of Statistics at UAE University. He got his Ph.D in 2002 from University of Montreal in Canada. He worked as lecturer in Concordia University for 4 years. He has a rich experience in applied statistics in finance in private and public sectors. He worked as assistant researcher in Finance Ministry (Revenue Canada). He worked as Senior Analyst in National Bank of Canada and developed statistical methods used in stock market forecasting. He joined in 2004 a team of researchers in finance group at CIRANO in Canada to develop statistical tools and modules in finance and risk analysis. He published several papers in well-known journals in the area of time series analysis and their applications in economics and finance.

Dr. Chang Heon Lee

Chang Heon Lee is an assistant professor of the Business Administration (BUSA) Department, College of Business and Economics (CBE), United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). He earned his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the Eller College School of Management, University of Arizona, USA. He is interested in the research areas of crowdsourcing/crowdfunding, social media, big data analytics, business intelligence, electronic commerce, and data mining. He also received his master degree in Management Information Systems from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA and his bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Korea University, South Korea.

 Dr. Ranjit Vijayan

Dr. Ranjit Vijayan

Dr Ranjit Vijayan was awarded an interdisciplinary PhD in Biochemistry/Life Sciences Interface from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Oxford, UK. His doctoral study was funded by a Clarendon Fund scholarship and the Overseas Research Students scholarship. Prior to joining UAE University, he was a Wellcome Trust funded postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Oxford working on the biophysics of membrane proteins.

He completed his BEng degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (specialization: Communication Engineering) with First Class Honors from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His undergraduate study was funded by a highly competitive SIA/NOL Undergraduate Scholarship. After his undergraduate studies he worked in the IT industry in Singapore for several years as an IT consultant. He then completed an MSc (Distinction) in Computer Science from the University of Wales, UK.

His research interests include bioinformatics, structure based drug discovery in cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders, computer simulations of proteins and membrane systems, and genomic sequencing. He has published several articles and a book chapter and has presented his results at several international conferences.

Dr. Sehjeong Kim

Dr. Sehjeong Kim

Sehjeong Kim is currently an associate professor in the Dept. of Mathematical Sciences at the College of Science at the United Arab Emirates University since 2012. She received her Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Waterloo in Canada. Prior to joining the UAEU, she was a research fellow in various places including Networks and Control Lab in Australian National University in Australia and infectious disease research groups in University of Victoria and St. Michael's Hospital in Canada. Her research interests include mathematical biology, continuous and discrete dynamical systems, and mathematical and statistical modeling for infectious, chronic and genetic diseases.

Moreover, she is the project leader of the development of an individualized asthma management system with a prediction mechanism for adverse health events due to the impact of air pollution and weather factors.

Dr. Hany Al Ashwal

Dr. Hany Al Ashwal

After undergraduate study in Math and Computer Science at the University of Cairo in Egypt, Dr. Hany Alashwal worked at Yemen’s Ibb University for one year before pursuing a Master’s and Ph.D. in Computer Science at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor – Malaysia.

He then worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island – USA for three years and later appointed by the college as Assistant Professor and Bioinformatics Core coordinator. During his postdoctoral fellowship, he also worked as an Assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School for Information Services. Dr. Alashwal joined UAEU in 2105 as Assistant Professor in the College of Information Technology.

Dr. Hanan AlDarmaki

Dr. Hanan AlDarmaki

Hanan Aldarmaki is an assistant professor in the Computer Science & Software Engineering Department at UAE University. Her primary research interests are in the areas of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), particularly in unsupervised approaches for low-resource languages where labeled data are sparse or nonexistent, and transfer learning across different languages. Active research activities include experiments on unsupervised ASR for Arabic dialects and investigating approaches for Arabic automatic reading assessment. 

 Dr. Mohammad Mehedy Masud
Dr. Mohammad Mehedy Masud

Dr. Mohammad Mehedy Masud is currently an Associate Professor at the UAEU. He joined the College of IT at UAEU in Spring 2012 as an Assistant Professor. He received his Ph.D. degree from University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) in December 2009.

His research interests are in data mining, especially, data stream mining and Big Data Mining. He has published more than 30 research papers in journals including IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE), Journal of Knowledge and Information Systems (KAIS), ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems (ACM TMIS) and peer reviewed conferences including IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM), European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML/PKDD) and Pacific Asia Conference on KDD. He is the principal inventor of a US Patent Application and lead author of the book “Data Mining Tools for Malware Detection”.

Dr. Masud has served as the Program Committee member of several prestigious conferences and he has been serving as the official reviewer of several journals including IEEE TKDE, IEEE TNNLS, and DMKD. During his service at the UAEU he has secured several internal and external grants as PI and Co-PI.

 Dr. Fida Dankar

Dr. Fida Dankar

Fida Dankar is an Associate Professor at the College of Information Technology at UAEU. She holds a PhD in Computer Science and a Master in Mathematics from University of Ottawa in Canada. Prior to joining UAEU, Fida was a research Scientist at IBM Canada Research and Development Centre, where she worked on the secure and private mining of distributed health data.

Fida did her Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Electronic Health Information Lab in the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario; her postdoctoral work was devoted to facilitating the sharing of health information for secondary purposes while protecting the privacy of patients and the identity of providers. Currently, her research focuses on the development of multidisciplinary approaches for the private and secure sharing/mining of health data that uses methods from cryptography, biomedical knowledge modeling and policy analysis.

 Dr. Yauhen Statsenko

Dr Yauhen Statsenko is an established investigator in diagnosing, rehabilitation and radiology (MRI, sonography).

His previous research work was focused on mathematical modeling of the regeneration process, early diagnostics methods of disadjustment diseases (acupuncture diagnosing, psychophysiological testing); prediction and treatment sport overtraining syndrome (decrease in adaptation reserve and athletic performance). To predict the professional diseases of athletes, he has classified and studied different markers of disadjustment process, proved the existence of informative laboratory signs of disadjustment.

Dr Statsenko’s experience allows him to expertise the effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological regenerative methods. Comparing the experimental data, achieved at different models of physical loads and inflammation process, he has checked the advisability of oxygen therapy, shock wave therapy, stress therapy (cryotherapy), homeopathy and some drugs (adaptogenic, antioxidant and antihypoxant therapy, methylxanthines, natural plant-based tranquilizers) in the sport.

Work as a coordinator in scientific-medical groups that controlled national sports teams in swimming, wrestling, cycling, hockey, handball, and football allowed him to get professional knowledge in information technologies (databases architecture) and strong professional skills in programming and medical statistics.

Before applying for the current position, he also worked as an Associate Professor in the Belarusian Medical Academy, lecturing in sport and alternative medicine, radiology.

Dr. Maha Bashri

Dr. Maha Bashri received both her Masters and Ph.D. in Mass Communication with emphasis on International Communication from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Before coming to the UAEU she was Associate Professor at the Slane College of Communication at Bradley University in the US. Her research interests are in the areas of international communication, political communication, and the effects of communication on development in Third World countries. Currently she is researching online networks and their influence on audiences.

Dr. Mohamed Sharaf

Dr. Mohamed Sharaf

Mohamed Sharaf is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), which he joined in 2019. Prior to that, he held positions as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland, and a Research Fellow at the University of Toronto. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2007. His research interest lies in the general area of Data Science, with a special emphasize on large-scale big data analytics, interactive human-in-the-loop data exploration, and scalable data visualization. His research contributions have been published in around 65 conference papers and journal articles including top-ranked journal articles (e.g., TODS, PVLDB, VLDB, TKDE, DAPD, WWW, Inf. Syst. journals) and top-ranked conferences papers (e.g., SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, CIKM, SSDBM, ICDM). He served on the program committees of all the major data management conferences including SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, EDBT, and CIKM. He also served as the general chair of MobiDE’13, the program committee chair of MobiDE’12, SMDB’14, ADC’14, ADC’15, ExploreDB’17, and an area chair for ICDE’18.

Dr. Saleh Al-Sharieh

Dr. Saleh Al-Sharieh

Dr. Saleh Al-Sharieh is an Associate Professor of Law at the UAEU. His research focuses on innovation regulation, intellectual property law, data protection, and comparative law. Saleh obtained his Doctorate of Laws from the University of Ottawa in Canada, where he held both the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada doctoral fellowship and the University of Ottawa Excellence Scholarship. Before joining the UAEU, he taught law and conducted legal and interdisciplinary research in Canada, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Saleh also enjoys many years of industrial experience in the management of intellectual property and innovation. He is currently the Intellectual Property Law Advisor for the UAEU's Associate Provost for Research Office.

Saleh’s research has appeared in legal journals such as Oxford's Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice; Law, Innovation and Technology Journal; Colorado Technology Law Journal; Windsor Yearbook of Access to Justice; Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law; European Journal of Comparative Law and Governance; Utrecht Journal of International and European Law; Alberta Law Review; and The Journal of World Intellectual Property.

Prof. Mohd Saberi Mohamad

Prof. Mohd Saberi Mohamad

Dr. Mohd Saberi Mohamad is a Professor of Bioinformatics and Artificial Intelligence at Department of Genetics and Genomics, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAEU. His research areas are Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Data Science, and Computational Biology. He has received the 2018 Malaysia’s Research Star Award in the category of young researchers by the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education. He has been the project leader for 19 research grants and the project member for 20 research grants. He has also published 282 articles in the international refereed journal, international conferences, and book chapters; and produced 14 books (research books, edited books, and original book). Previously before joining UAUE, he had experience as a Director for the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, a founder of the Department of Data Science, and a head of the Artificial Intelligence and Bioinformatics Research Group. He also has been appointed as an advisory board for Artificial Intelligence Research Institute and IoT Digital Innovation Hub in Europe. He served as seven chairman and 39 members of the committees for international conferences in Europe, ASEAN, Japan, US, Australia, China, and Malaysia. He has become an accreditation panel to Malaysia Qualification Agency to review academic programs.

Dr. Alya Arabi

Dr. Alya Arabi

Dr. Alya A. Arabi is Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, College of Medicine and Health Sciences at UAEU (2020-). She is Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at University College London, UK (2017-).

In 2012, Dr. Arabi received her PhD in Chemistry from Dalhousie University, Canada. In 2008, she was awarded a Bachelor of Sciences Honors degree with highest aggregate from Mount Saint Vincent University joint with Dalhousie University, Canada. Dr. Arabi received numerous prestigious awards including the Killam Predoctoral Scholarship, NSERC Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral, and the 2nd Khalifa Fund Techo-preneur Award in the UAE.
Dr. Arabi accepted Adjunct Faculty positions at Mount Saint Vincent University, Canada, and Abu Dhabi University, UAE (2012-2013). She then joined the College of Natural and Health Sciences at Zayed University, UAE, as an Assistant Professor (2014-2018), and as an Associate Professor (2018-2020).
Her research interests lie in the investigation of biochemical systems using computational tools. She studies 1) the effect of external factors such as electric fields and intercalators on mutations in DNA, and 2) bioisosterism in drug design. Her research is published in highly-ranked international journals.
