The United Arab Emirates University Center for Public Policy and Leadership organized a workshop (CHERD) for deans and their assistants from various higher education institutions recently. It took place in the College of Information Technology. It was held on the morning of Monday 9^th March, 2015. This three day workshop was designed to improve leadership in higher education.

The workshop discussed the principles and practices of leadership in higher education, the expectations of academic leaders and their roles and responsibilities. Major topics were how to develop and evaluate performance indicators for these leaders, and how to implement and measure quality assurance. This workshop is in line with efforts to achieve academic excellence that matches academic and institutional accreditation standards. It also reflects the goals of the decision makers in the various higher education institutions.

Three specialists in the field of leadership development in higher education spoke in this workshop. Dr. Alan Davis, President and Vice Chancellor of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, spoke about global and regional trends in the field of higher education, the importance of scientific research and how it must be included in the planning process because of its role in the development of the national economy. Dr. Kathleen Matthews, manager of the CHERD Program, talked about the role of government in higher education institutions and their responsibilities, while Dr. David Kirby, Director of the Centre for Higher Education Research and Development at the University of Manitoba, Canada, addressed the subjects of teaching, learning and service in the field of higher education.
