The Department of Sociology at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) organized a panel discussion entitled ‘Towards a Better Married Life’. It focused on the role of the government in educating married couples according to Sharia and Law and described the divorce phenomenon that threatens UAE society. It was held on the morning of Wednesday 13/5/2015, in the Crescent Building Theater on the Maqam campus. Professor Saif Al Qaydi, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Mohammed Hassan, Dean of the College of Law, representatives of the Marriage Fund and faculty and students from the university were all in attendance.

The workshop discussed the phenomenon of divorce and its spread. It went on to discuss its impact on children and how to regulate a marital relationship. Dr. Abdulla Tunaiji, Assistant Professor in the College of Law, talked about the importance of the family and its organization according Sharia and Law. He stressed the importance in the Islamic tradition and Sharia Law of choosing the right partner to start a family with. He also talked of the consequences of separation and mentioned the role of UAE law in preserving marriage.

Dr. Suad Al Marzooqi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, talked about the effects of divorce on men, women and children. He also discussed the reasons behind it such as a lack of harmony between the couple, the existence of problems between the children and the absence of positive dialogue between family members.

Dr. Habiba Al Hosani, Acting Director General of the Marriage Fund, described the services offered by the fund to support and preserve the Emirati family. She also mentioned some tips aimed at preserving the family and discussed the need to set goals in order for the family to work together successfully.
