Mon, 26 February 2024
The "Wave Energy Research Team" at the College of Engineering, led by Professor Addy
Wahyudie, secured third place in the Second Edition Clean Tech Hackathon 2024 hosted
by DEWA’s Innovation Centre. This event, part of UAE Innovates 2024, aimed to foster
innovative solutions in clean and renewable energy, showcasing the country's commitment
to sustainability.
Structured around three main tracks, the Hackathon focused on optimizing the efficiency of clean energy, ensuring reliability and stability, and integrating renewables seamlessly. The competition assessed the technology readiness level of implementing wave energy power in the UAE, aligning with the growing emphasis on diversifying energy sources in the Gulf region.
The team, consisting of Omsalama Mubarak Saeed, Abdin Yousif Elamin, and Tuanku Badzlin Hasfie from the College of Engineering's Department of Electrical and Communication, along with Professor Addy Wahyudie, achieved this recognition. The Wave Energy Conversion Research Team, led by Dr. Addy Wahyudie from the UAEU's Electrical Engineering Department, also participated in this initiative. Their work concentrates on heaving point absorbers wave energy converters with a direct power take-off mechanism utilizing a permanent magnet linear generator. Recognizing the potential of sea wave energy in the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, investing in wave energy technologies aligns with sustainability goals and reduces reliance on traditional fossil fuels.
