Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine
The Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine program, under the Department of Veterinary Medicine, UAEU College of Agriculture & Veterinary Medicine, accepted its first students in 2014 with the mandate of training primarily Emirati veterinarians based on a 5-year, 175 credit hour curriculum that culminates in conferral of the BVM degree. Graduates are instrumental in the delivery of veterinary services in the UAE where they are expected to take up private and public sector employment opportunities that are pertinent to ensuring both animal and public health, as well as food safety and security in the country. The job market for BVM graduates is expanding with increasing employment opportunities in the livestock industry (e.g. dairy and poultry farms, fisheries, etc.), wildlife conservation, public and private clinical practice, biomedical research, pharmaceutical and animal feed/supplies industries, wildlife conservation, zoos and aquariums, military and police equine and canine units, regulatory affairs, animal welfare, borders and ports control, etc.
Program Objectives
- To enable students to acquire the necessary knowledge, practical skills, and experience to become qualified veterinarians.
- To advocate the application of evidence-based veterinary medicine and problem-oriented solving methods.
- To graduate veterinarians capable of providing superior animal health care, including disease investigation and prevention, at the individual and herd or flock levels.
- To meet the growing national need for qualified veterinarians in the public and private sectors.
- To enable graduates pursue higher academic degrees in veterinary medical sciences or other related sciences.
- To equip graduates with the skills needed to control and prevent zoonotic diseases and safeguard the public from food-borne diseases.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Implement appropriate health care regimens for individual animals of different species.
- Perform health monitoring and management to achieve optimal animal production at the herd or flock levels.
- Apply high standards of public health and food safety.
- Recognize infectious and non-infectious diseases, and their optimal treatment and prevention methods.
- Conduct epidemiological investigations and veterinary research using appropriate methods, ethical guidelines, and statistical analysis.
- Communicate technical information effectively with clients, fellow professionals and intended audience.
- Evaluate information from different sources and use information technology to find up-to-date information and manage data.
