United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) - Top Universities in Middle East

Adopting the "moral education" approach

The College of Education, in collaboration with Basmat Najah Club, at the United Arab Emirates University on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, organized the ‘Moral Education’ initiative, in the presence of Major-General Pilot Sheikh Ahmed bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National and Reserve Service Authority of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Dr. Ali Rashid Nuaimi, Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University, and a number of deputies, deans, faculty members, and students of the University and schools in the State, in order to enhance the concept of moral education and its importance for parents and students.

Major-General Pilot Sheikh Ahmed bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan gave a detailed presentation on the role of national service in promoting patriotism, touching on several topics, such as patriotism as a fundamental pillar of the moral system, explaining that the martyrs are "the pride of the nation". He stressed that the UAE society is full of inherent ethics, principles, and values that direct the behaviors of society, and therefore, they not only impact the individual, but they also impact the society and the entire state. Also that they are not limited to professions and transactions, rather, they include countries’ relations with each other and their laws as well.

The Chairman of the National and Reserve Service Authority also explained that the launch of the Moral Education initiative confirms the keenness of the leadership to promote moral values and positive behaviors in our society, and urge our daughters and sons to hold on to the ethics and behaviors that citizens grew up with, as one of the elements of progress and success. Given the serious security challenges facing the region and the world today, these values, ethics and behaviors are especially important.

At the end of the lecture, the Major-General stressed that National Service has succeeded in preparing generations of national leaders who have the moral ingredients to defend the country, and who are truly loyal to Allah Almighty, the country, and the President of the State. National Service has also succeeded in creating generations who stand up for what is right and who are fully prepared to sacrifice their lives for their country. He stressed the leaders’ trust in their sons, and recalled the saying of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, during his visit to a training camp for National Service, that "Protecting and defending the country is the duty of everyone in the State, and such a thing did not only begin with the establishment of the State of the Union, but since man was found on the earth and through the sacrifices of our fathers and grandfathers who defended their lands and honor and left us with a good reputation and noble values. We and the future generations have a duty and responsibility to continue their journey. Just as we are proud today of our ancestors for their sacrifices and for defending their country and honor, we want our future generations to take pride in our achievements and sacrifices to be a source of pride for them".

For his part, His Excellency Dr. Ali Al-Nuaimi, during his speech, stressed that this meeting comes in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, with regard to the Moral Initiative, an embodiment of the true vision of the UAE leadership to create a culture based on ethics to ensure the sustainability of the community and contribute effectively to its development. He said: "Establishing ethics is every official’s mission", referring to the role played by the United Arab Emirates University in adopting national initiatives of all kinds to promote patriotism for university and school students, and so that they may benefit from these experiences and views and turn them into a behavior that contributes to the advancement of societies. He stressed that the development of a country’s people depends on their holding on to high values, adding: "The UAE people are the pride of the country … and Zayed's sons are distinguished by their morals and not just their names".

The meeting concluded with a video that introduced the role of National Service to instill ethics. Student Hazza Al Dhaheri, from the military secondary school, swore allegiance to the UAE. For their part, Dr. Najwa Al Hosani, Assistant Professor in the College of Education and Ms. Azza Al Kaabi, conducted a panel discussion on moral education, and His Excellency Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi honored the participants in the initiative at the end of the event.
