The College of Education at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in collaboration with the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) organized on Wednesday 14th March 2018 a workshop on the teaching profession’s development standards.
The workshop aimed to explore the teacher-licensing program, and to introduce awareness initiative for teachers and the Teacher and Educational Leadership Standards (TELS). Professor Hassan Tairab, Acting Dean of the College of Education, explained that the UAEU College of Education is now the "UAE's most pioneer education college with its excellent programs and research production.
This joint workshop has helped the audience to know more about the TELS and how to meet the needs of the UAE Education sector, considering the UAE cultural and traditional values which are adopted by the university. The alignment with such standards will help in strengthening the capabilities of national competencies to the requirements and challenges of the labor market. The college's programs are designed and developed in accordance with the needs of the university's strategic partners including the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education and Knowledge.”
Tairab added that there will be more orientation and workshops will be held to enhance understanding and implementing the TELS at UAE schools. Dr. Frederico Conde, Director of Professional Standards Division of at ADEK, gave a presentation on the national standards of teacher licensing, which were established after consultation with education specialists and academicians, to be used in assessing, qualifying and licensing teachers in private and public schools.
The orientation session discussed setting unified tests for teachers prior to attaining the license, establishing strong qualifying basis including, ethical and professional conducts, and professional knowledge ethics, practices and development. The Teachers and Education Leadership Standards TELSUAE licensing standards; includes four standards for teachers: Professional and Ethical Conduct, Professional Knowledge, Professional Practice and Professional Growth. Other standards for the school leadership were also developed and include Professional and Ethical Leadership, Strategic Leadership, Educational Leadership and Operational Leadership.
