A statistics carried out by a research team from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) on the readiness of Emiratis to participate in preserving the environment and the political and ethical dimensions of this duty in the UAE has shown that Emiratis are well aware about the different environmental issues and their dimensions.
The study conducted by the two researchers Dr. AbdulFattah Yaghi and Dr. Madalla Alibeli, Political Science Department of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, UAEU, surveyed a random sample of Emiratis from the UAE’s different cities and areas about their opinions and awareness levels of a number of UAE environmental issues including water scarcity and pollution. It also measured their readiness to contribute to protecting the environment.
Dr. Yaghi explained that the study published in an international journal reflects a bright aspect of the public awareness of environmental problems. However, more government and society initiatives are needed to alleviate the environmental burden on the government and transform Emiratis’ awareness into actual contribution through providing suggestions and solutions such as changing the energy consumption patterns, particularly the fuel. People need to be educated about the importance of renewable energy and, rationalizing water and electricity consumption to help increase the environmental awareness in the society.
