Pioneering Academic Programs
Prof. Maamar Benkraouda noted that the College of Science, one of the founding colleges of the United Arab Emirates University since its establishment in 1976, includes five academic departments: Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics. The college currently offers seven bachelor's programs and 13 master's and doctoral programs, all of which are accredited by the Ministry of Education in the UAE and by specialized international organizations, further cementing its status as a prestigious academic institution.
State-of-the-Art Education Technologies and Cutting-Edge Laboratories
The Dean explained that the college places great importance on developing modern teaching technologies, relying on smart classrooms and e-learning methods. Additionally, its laboratories are equipped with the latest technical and experimental tools. The college is also distinguished by its diverse academic and research staff, who possess extensive scientific expertise. They actively involve students in innovative research projects that contribute to enhancing their knowledge and developing their skills.
International Partnerships to Promote Scientific Research
He added that the college collaborates with a wide range of international academic and research institutions, including Net Zero Technologies, New York University Abu Dhabi, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and the University of Belgrade. He explained that these partnerships enhance opportunities for collaborative scientific research, supporting the college's vision of producing future scientists and contributing to the development of a sustainable, knowledge-based economy.
New Programs for the 2024/2025 Academic Year
Prof. Benkraouda announced the launch of several new academic programs for the 2024/2025 academic year, with the most notable being the Bachelor’s in Data Science. Additionally, a Master’s in Forensic Science will be introduced in collaboration with Dubai Police and Abu Dhabi Police at the start of the upcoming year. The college will also offer new Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Chemistry. Furthermore, Prof. Benkraouda highlighted the renewal of academic accreditation for the Bachelor’s in Biology program for five years by the Royal Society of Biology in the United Kingdom.
Scientific Research Achievements
The college demonstrated remarkable advancement in scientific research, with its scholars publishing 646 research papers in global peer-reviewed scientific journals in 2023. Additionally, 36 new academic research projects were funded for the 2024/2025 academic year.
The Geological Museum: A Unique Scientific Reference
The Geological Museum at the college is a unique scientific reference in the country, housing 10 sections with 460 geological specimens, including minerals, rocks, and fossils from both local and international sources. The museum features the oldest rock in the UAE, which is 540 million years old, as well as rare rocks and fossils from Jebel Hafeet and other mountainous areas. It highlights the role of geoscience in various industries such as oil and ceramics, and serves as a scientific database for newly discovered research samples.
Future Vision
Prof. Benkraouda affirmed that the College of Science is committed to achieving academic and research excellence by expanding its scientific programs and enhancing its local and international partnerships, solidifying its position as one of the leading scientific colleges in the region and the world.
