United Arab Emirates University Board of Trustees Convenes its 4th Meeting for the 2024/2025 Academic Year

Under the chairmanship of His Excellency Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to His Highness the President of the UAE and Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), the Board of Trustees convened today at UAEU’s Al Ain campus for its fourth meeting of the 2024/2025 academic year.

His Excellency opened the meeting by extending his gratitude to the esteemed Board members and external advisors for their steadfast commitment to advancing UAEU’s mission and strategic objectives.

The meeting primarily focused on evaluating the UAEU’s 2024 performance against the strategic KPIs set out in the university’s 2023–2026 strategy. It provided an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments, address challenges, and reaffirm the Board’s commitment to achieving UAEU’s goal of ranking among the world’s top 200 universities by 2026.

The evaluation highlighted progress across the UAEU’s three strategic goals: student success, research and innovation, and societal impact.  Key achievements included exceeding employment targets with 66.9% of graduates employed within nine months, record-breaking faculty research outputs and citations, and significant strides in sustainability, including a 13.93% reduction in campus carbon emissions.  Additionally, lifelong learning initiatives benefited over 15,000 participants, underscoring UAEU’s dedication to its strategic vision for 2026.

The Board was presented with a report outlining the UAEU’s new admission criteria and their anticipated impact. The report highlighted the proactive measures undertaken by management and faculty to ensure these changes are implemented effectively, prioritizing the benefits to the student body and contributing positively to the UAE’s broader educational objectives.

Key decisions were also made based on recommendations from Board committees:

Academic and Student Affairs Committee:

  • The Board approved revisions to the university’s General Education Program, aimed at enhancing its alignment with UAEU’s strategic goals. The reformed program emphasizes the development of key competencies, including pride in UAE national identity, effective communication, innovative problem-solving, entrepreneurial skills, and sustainability awareness, ensuring graduates are equipped for future challenges and opportunities.

Finance, Administration, and Investment Committee:

  • The Board approved a comprehensive investment policy for the UAEU, aimed at providing clear guidelines for managing financial resources. The policy's primary objectives are to ensure financial sustainability, optimize returns, and align investment strategies with the university's overarching strategic goals.
  • The Board approved a succession policy for the UAEU, applicable to all senior leadership roles, including Vice Chancellor, Deans, and Directors. This policy is designed to ensure seamless leadership transitions while aligning with the university’s strategic vision and supporting its Emiratization goals.

Audit and Risk Committee:

  • The Board endorsed the UAEU’s 2024 final account, which has been formally submitted to the Ministry of Finance and the UAE Accountability Authority.

Finally, in keeping with good governance practices, the board also endorsed its performance evaluation results which will be submitted to the UAE Cabinet.  In his closing remarks, His Excellency Zaki Nusseibeh expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the board members for their invaluable contributions, insightful deliberations, and steadfast dedication to the success of UAE University. He emphasized that their unwavering commitment to advancing the university’s vision continues to propel the institution forward. "It is your dedication that drives UAEU to achieve excellence," he remarked, expressing confidence in their collective efforts to reach even greater milestones in the months ahead.
