Researchers at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) are developing an innovative technique for creating stronger, higher-performance concrete that is equipped to withstand the extremities of the Gulf climate.
Harsh weather conditions in the region, such as high humidity and significant temperature change, can affect the quality of construction materials, as can the high proportion of chloride used in the concrete mix.
These factors ultimately contribute to concrete degrading and corroding, causing severe issues for buildings and infrastructure, as well as in sewage pipes which use traditional reinforced concrete.
The technology developed at UAEU – was led by Professor Abdul Mohsen Onsy Mohamed, former Professor at UAEU’s Civil Engineering Department, and now the recipient of a patent from the Patent Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States – stems from extensive experiments on the use of “doping substances” in the preparation of sulfur cement and concrete, with the aim of enhancing the quality, durability, and effectiveness of the material when it is used in construction.
“It reduces the moisture permeability and the amount of water in the concrete. The aim is to produce high-performance materials that are both safe and environmentally friendly.”
