From Smart Umbrellas to Turning Conflict Zones into Liveable Neighbourhoods

The College of Engineering at United Arab Emirates University hosted the “Engineered by Design Exhibition: From Vision to Impact” in the presence of H.E. Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to the UAE President and Chancellor of United Arab Emirates University, and H.E. Prof. Ahmed Ali Al Raeesi, Vice Chancellor of the university, alongside faculty members and students. The exhibition was held at the UAEU Science and Innovation Park on the university campus.

The exhibition reflects the university’s commitment to preparing students capable of transforming ideas into practical solutions with positive societal impact. It also highlights the university’s academic and research outputs, providing an inclusive educational environment that fosters innovation and bridges theoretical knowledge with practical application.

The exhibition showcased over 20 outstanding engineering projects developed by undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of sustainable architecture, advanced construction systems, and renewable energy solutions, with a strong focus on addressing real-world urban challenges.

Among these projects were innovative housing modules based on modular construction, prefabrication, and 3D printing technologies, enhancing implementation efficiency and reducing costs. Other designs included sustainable vertical cities that consider cultural privacy and respond to rapid urban growth.

The “Engineered by Design Exhibition: From Vision to Impact” aims to strengthen the connection between academic learning and practical application by aligning student projects with labour market needs and expanding collaboration with external partners. It also highlights student work that contributes to improving university facilities and enhancing the campus experience.

The exhibition reflects the university’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, serving as a comprehensive platform for education and applied engineering. It emphasizes the role of design in transforming visions into impactful solutions that support infrastructure development and improve quality of life both on and beyond campus.

The projects also span energy and environmental engineering, including intelligent systems that track the sun to reduce energy consumption in university buildings, and vertical farming systems integrated into residential towers to enhance food and environmental sustainability. Other notable innovations include atmospheric water harvesting technologies, parametric ceilings for environmental regulation, passive cooling systems, and smart sun umbrellas for public transport infrastructure, reflecting students’ ability to adapt advanced technologies to desert climates.

In social and humanitarian engineering, students proposed solutions to recycle rubble from damaged buildings in conflict areas into recycled concrete for affordable residential neighbourhoods. Additional projects included the design of healthcare centers and flexible mosques that can be rapidly expanded using prefabricated systems.
