Workshop Description
This two-part workshop will introduce the students to the theoretical and practical framework for systematic and literature review methodologies and information search strategies. An overview of different types of literature-based reviews and their reporting requirements will be given as well as practical examples and class activities on how to conduct a systematic search. The workshop will cover topics such as the role of systematic reviews in evidence-based research and practice, reporting guidelines (PRISMA, the Equator network etc.), protocol preparation and registration, systematic search strategies and reporting requirements, quality assessment tools and Covidence systematic review software.
In the workshop, you will learn how to:
Session 1:
- Recognize the difference between a literature review and a systematic review and their role in supporting evidence-based research and practice
- Identify different types of reporting guidelines and method requirements for systematic reviews and literature reviews including the new, 2020 PRISMA statement.
- Identify the role of multidisciplinary teamwork in systematic review projects
- Identify the requirements for protocol preparation and transparent methods reporting in systematic reviews
- Define different methods for minimizing bias in systematic reviews
- Recognize the connection between the quality of the literature search and method reporting and the overall quality and straights of evidence in a systematic or literature review
- Identify different types of quality assessment tools and checklists for systematic reviews such as PRESS and the PRISMA checklists and Cabells predatory reports.
Session 2:
- Select information sources relevant for the research question and type of review
- Identify the impact of using truncation, Boolean operators, field search, phrasing and Thesaurus/MeSH in a systematic search
- Utilize truncation, Boolean operators, field search, phrasing and Thesaurus/MeSH to enhance the search quality and outcome
- Recognize the connection between search term inclusion and search result
- Utilize the search history for search construction and search process evaluation
- Identify how a systematic review tool such as Covidence, can be used for reporting of the de-duplication, search and selection process.
Resources
Databases and research productivity tools available from UAEU libraries (PubMed, Scopus, Covidence) will be used in demonstrations and class practice. No preparation is needed. All sources are accessible with UAEU student credentials.
