Workshop Description
Scientific communities are generating a massive amount of data with enormous complexity, and need sophisticated statistical algorithms, graphics libraries and data mining techniques to effectively analyze their datasets. Moreover, the scientific community requires an open-source framework under which a collection of tools could be created and shared by all to reuse freely. The R statistical package created in the early '90s is a programming language as well as a software environment for statistical computing with excellent libraries for statistical analyses, graphics and data mining.
R is freely available for download and is designed to be highly extendable through well-documented libraries/packages, which are accessible for download and installation from R. R has a large and constantly expanding user base among researchers and nowadays it is very common to submit R scripts while publications for analyses reproducibility. However, R is not principally GUI driven and we may have to write a code to execute specific functions. For this, we need formal and basic learning of the R language and its data structures.
The goal of this workshop is
1) to teach the basic concepts that R programming depends on
2) to help the user acquire a hand-on working experience of R, even if the user has no prior programming experience. The users can systematically learn R following the basic principles.
The following topics will be covered in this workshop.
- Introducing R – overview and installation of R packages
- Data types and structure in R
- R scripts – writing and executing
- Logical statements and control loops
- Data manipulations with vectors and data frames
- Graphics in R
Resources
Please ensure that your laptop has R installed instruction will be sent prior to the workshop. Since it is an open source platform therefore R 4.0.3 can be installed following this website (https://www.r-project.org/ and https://cloud.r-project.org/).
In the course we will use R-studio 1.4.1103 (free version and more user friendly) that require R 4.0.3 to be installed on the laptop. Follow the link to install R-studio program. https://rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/
