Workshop Description
As part of their research study, research students (Masters and Doctoral) are required to read several past theses/dissertations that are relevant to their topic or area of research. This reading has multiple benefits for research students including (i) familiarity with the past and up-to-date studies in their chosen area of research, (ii) enabling them to create their own research niche, and (iii) familiarity with the basic structure and components of a research thesis/dissertation.
However, to make the best use of this task, graduate students must know how to properly critique theses/dissertations and identifying their points of strength and weakness, which will ultimately enable them to produce a refined and robust thesis/dissertation of their own research project.
This workshop will acquaint research students with the key aspects and procedures for critiquing past theses or dissertations in their chosen area of research. This critiquing includes conceptualization of the study; providing clear purpose and strong rationale for the study; contextualizing the study in relevant and up-to-date literature; grounding the research questions or hypotheses in the relevant literature, theory, or practice; explaining and justifying the research methodology used; ways of reporting the results; discussing the findings with reference to the relevant literature; highlighting the significance of the findings for theory and/or practice; ways of making recommendations, theoretical and/or practical, and suggestions for further research.
