The United Arab Emirates University hosted the “Agricultural Sustainability and Food
Security Forum” as part of its participation in the Emirates Agriculture Conference
and Exhibition 2026. The forum brought together officials, experts, academics, and
researchers to promote scientific dialogue on the future of sustainable agriculture
and to develop innovative solutions supporting the food security system in the UAE
and the region.
His Excellency Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to the UAE President and Chancellor
of the United Arab Emirates University, affirmed in his opening address that this
national scientific forum comes at a vital time, reflecting the UAE’s commitment and
the support of its wise leadership for agricultural sustainability and food security.
His Excellency stated: “The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan gave agriculture
a central priority in shaping the nation, believing it to be the foundation of independence
and growth, as well as a pillar for preserving the land and human dignity. Today,
we continue this wise approach and affirm that agriculture remains the soul of sustainability
in its contemporary concept. It represents one of the deeply rooted values of Al Ain
and the UAE.”
His Excellency highlighted the role of the United Arab Emirates University since its
establishment as a flagship institution that promotes science, knowledge, and future
foresight. This role is reflected in the journey of the College of Agriculture and
Veterinary Medicine, which has laid the foundations for excellence in education and
research in modern agriculture, technologies, animal health, and food security.

Excellency Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment,
said: “Hosting this forum during the Emirates Agriculture Conference and Exhibition
in Al Ain holds particular significance, inspired by the visionary legacy of the late
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father, (may he rest in peace), who
established agriculture as a cornerstone of the nation’s development journey. Today,
the UAE continues this approach with a broader vision, placing food security at the
centre of its priorities and recognising that building a sustainable and resilient
agricultural sector is a shared responsibility that requires the integration of policies,
knowledge, innovation, and investment in people.”
Her Excellency added: “In this context, we believe that agricultural scientific research is one of the most impactful pathways for shaping the future of food. Global studies highlight the high average annual economic return on investment in agricultural research and development, making it one of the most profitable sectors. Therefore, empowering youth, strengthening the role of universities, and aligning education with national needs have become strategic imperatives for creating a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient food system, one that can turn challenges into opportunities and secure a prosperous agricultural future for generations to come.”
Her Excellency commended the United Arab Emirates University for establishing an inspiring
scientific model to advance modern agricultural practices through research and academia.
She expressed confidence in the capability of Emirati youth across the nation’s universities
to lead research and capacity-building efforts in this critical field. Her Excellency
also emphasised that young people are uniquely placed to embrace climate-smart agricultural
technologies, which underpin the future of this promising sector in the UAE.
The forum featured specialised scientific sessions. The first, titled “Food Sustainability,
Circular Bioeconomy Culture, and the Future of Food Systems,” addressed the reuse
of agricultural resources and the development of a bioeconomy culture to support sustainability.
The second session, “The Impact of Climate Change on Animal Production and Meat Quality,”
highlighted the effects of heat stress and environmental changes on animal growth
and product quality. A third keynote presentation, “The Relationship Between the Genome
and Food Security,” showcased the role of modern genetic technologies in supporting
sustainable agricultural production and enhancing food security.
The programme also included a panel discussion titled “Integrating Agriculture, Food
Safety, and Climate Science for a Sustainable Future.” Panelists discussed the importance
of integrating research with supportive policies to achieve a resilient and sustainable
agricultural system, while reinforcing the role of academic institutions in developing
practical applications and linking them to community needs. The forum concluded with
the recognition of winners of the scientific poster competition, followed by a closing
speech affirming the importance of continuing partnerships between the university
and local entities to enhance research and support food security in the UAE.
Organising this forum aligns with the university’s commitment to its national role
as a leading academic and research institution, contributing to the development of
sustainable environmental and agricultural solutions and supporting the UAE’s vision
for an innovative and sustainable future.
