Professor Lee Sang-Mook, Associate Professor in the Marine Geophysics and Geodynamics Laboratory of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Seoul National University in the Republic of South Korea, delivered a lecture on his personal experiences of challenging disability, on Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, in the College of Information Technology at the United Arab Emirates University as part of a series of lectures. It was delivered in the presence of Dr. Ahmed Murad, Dean of the College of Science, professors and students.

The aim of the lecture was to describe a unique experience in facing the challenges of disability and to promote communication. Professor Lee Sang-Mook defined existence and our place in the universe from his personal point of view, citing his experience as an able-bodied teacher before he was injured in a horrific traffic accident which left him disabled. However, it did not stop him from continuing to help others.

Professor Lee Sang-Mook said that, “Computers, smart phones and modern applications helped me a lot in terms of communication, work, and teaching. There is no barrier that prevents me from giving my best and working”. He stressed the importance of the sciences in supporting students with disabilities and added that, “Death is the greatest teacher, and there is nothing new that one can learn after this experience. After I faced death, I realized it was a pivotal experience and my life changed for the better afterwards as I give more to others”.  Professor Lee gives lessons about the world and helps people with disabilities to learn by using modern technology. He explained how a deaf person could learn a second language and a blind person can study Math.

At the end of the lecture, Dr. Ahmed Mourad honored Professor Lee Sang-Mook for sharing his inspiring experience with students, and for his efforts in confirming the cooperation and communication between UAEU and Seoul National University, especially in terms of the exchange of students for summer programs.
