The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Supreme Legislation Committee in order to promote joint action to consolidate the role of law in creating an integrated society based on mutual understanding. The two sides stressed concerted efforts to keep abreast of developments that have a positive impact on legal, research and academic levels in the UAE. The MOU was signed by Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Vice Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University, and His Excellency Ahmad Bin Meshar, Secretary-General of the Supreme Legislation Committee.

Dr. Al Nuaimi stressed that UAEU as, “the national university has an important role in the progress and prosperity of the UAE”. UAEU works to develop scientific research and innovation in fields of national and regional importance through promoting partnerships with community organizations. This enhances UAEU’s leading role in contributing to the development of solutions to social challenges as reflected in a number of agreements and memoranda of understanding with various state institutions.

He added that this lays a solid foundation for building a fruitful partnership that makes a valuable contribution to developing a legislative system that aims to improve the level of legal training to produce a generation of professionals capable of leading the legal process in the UAE. He pointed out that the university is confident that this new partnership will be an important addition to UAEU’s attempts to achieve an international research status by meeting community needs and conducting research on emerging issues of relevance to local and international legislation.

Ahmad Bin Meshar pointed out the importance of this strategic partnership between the Supreme Legislation Committee and UAEU. It serves the public interest at federal and local levels. He also noted that the MOU represents an important addition to the network of relationships between the secretariat and prominent local, regional and international bodies concerned with legal and legislative affairs. He pointed out that the new MOU focuses on innovation, enriching knowledge and encouraging optimal investment in training and research. This is fundamental to the development of the legislative process in line with the continuous development of the UAE.

He continued, “We are delighted to cooperate with a prestigious academic institution such as the United Arab Emirates University, with which we share a common vision to transfer, enrich and deepen legal knowledge; stimulate innovation, creativity and excellence in legislative and legal work. We are optimistic about this new partnership which is a major boost in our endeavor to create an integrated legislative system that supports sustainable development and embodies the vision of our national leadership.”

In addition, both sides revealed their intention to open new channels for the exchange of creative and innovative ideas, proposals, and programs, in order to meet the objective of strengthening the legislative and legal infrastructure. This contributes to achieving the ‘National Innovation Strategy’ to make the UAE one of the most innovative countries in the world in the next few years. The two parties agreed to cooperate in terms of legal training with a focus on providing students in the UAEU College of Law with the best training programs related to drafting legislation as well as preparing and publishing specialized legal research.
