The Department of Mathematics in the College of Science at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) held their 13^th Mathematics Day recently. Representatives from the Ministry of Education and the Abu Dhabi Education Council, as well as many high school students attended the event on Wednesday, 19^th April, 2017 at the UAEU campus in Al-Ain.

Professor Ahmed Murad, Dean of the College of Science, highlighted the most notable achievements of UAEU researchers and mathematicians. Many of these achievements have helped to develop other sciences such as Engineering and Physics. The activities encouraged students to be creative and deal with such challenges in different ways.

Dr. Mohammed Al Hamadi, head of the department, stressed that the purpose of this event was to attract school students to Mathematics and introduce them to different BA and MA programs at UAEU. Dr. Al Hamadi pointed out that the common fallacy that Mathematics leads to jobs that are limited to education was far from true. This misconception is part of the reason that fewer male students choose Mathematics. He stated that we should use this time to commemorate the contributions of Mathematicians such as Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi.

The activities included lectures on smart and creative learning environments and innovations in the field of mathematics. These lectures were delivered by UAEU professors, specialists from the Ministry of Education, and representatives from the Abu Dhabi Education Council and other institutions. Also, competitions were held for secondary students to engage with mathematical concepts. UAEU Mathematics graduates, now working in different institutions, exchanged views and ideas about improving educational outcomes in order to keep abreast of the needs of the job market. At the end, participants were honored. The Mathematics Department also offered a set of books to the representatives and teachers from the Ministry of Education to mark the The Year of Giving.
