The College of Science (CoS) at United Arab Emirate University (UAEU) held a session on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, 16th of September, in the presence of Professor Ahmed Murad, Dean of College of Science. The discussion was led by Dr Dalal Al Shamsi, and attended by Dr. Muna Al Falasi, Dr Mahmoud Abu Saima, College of Science and a number of the college students.
“This session is part of the college’s contribution to educating the students about the importance of the world’s ozone layer, the problems related to the hole in the ozone layer and the importance of preserving the ozone layer by following a lifestyle that does not contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer,” said Professor Murad.
The participants discussed the definition of ozone layer, its location in the earth’s atmosphere and its components, the international protocols of preserving it, the causes of the ozone layer depletion and its negative effects on humans, animals and plants.
The discussion also revolved around the artificial production of the ozone for medical use. The participants had a debate on whether the ozone layer is really at risk and should be an international focus or is it only a propaganda promoted by environmentalists.
