H.E. Mariam Al Mehairi, the UAE’s Minister of State for Food Security, and an accompanying delegation visited the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) and met with Professor Mohamed Albaili, UAEU Vice Chancellor. The Minister and her accompanying delegation were briefed on the UAEU’s academic programs on agricultural sciences and food security.
Professor Albaili stressed UAEU’s role in achieving excellence in higher education’s agriculture programs at the regional and international levels in line with the leadership’s vision of achieving sustainable food security. He explained that the university has designed new specialized academic and applied programs to keep pace with international developments in agricultural applied research and technologies, and that contribute to building the UAE’s agricultural knowledge-based economy, and align with modern trends in agriculture and food security.
H.E. Al Mehairi praised the UAEU’s educational facilities, including state-of-art laboratories and research centers, which contributed to preparing a national cadre qualified to work in the field. She asserted that the UAE, as part of its strategic agenda, places a great priority on national food security, in line with high international standards.
As part of the visit, the delegation toured the UAEU College of Food and Agriculture, where a number of students showcased their applied researches on: water, soil, animal nutrition, food microbiology, and nutrition and horticulture analysis.
Dr. Khalid Al-Amiri, Director of Khalifa Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology explained the aim of the center which hosts specialized researchers interested in various areas of biotechnology and genetic engineering. He pointed out the significance of the center’s molecular biology and tissue culture laboratories in conducting studies on local plants’ genetic transformation, quantitative genetic analysis, genetically modified plant multiplication, gene production mechanisms, and other researches, contributing to the success of the UAE’s food and agriculture security.
