With Four Patents in 2024, UAEU PhD Researcher Achieves a Significant Breakthrough in Renewable Wind Energy and Drones
Thu, 26 December 2024

Dr. Zishan Akhter, a recent graduate from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the College of Engineering, UAEU, has achieved a significant scientific milestone by obtaining four new patents in the fields of wind energy technology, aeroacoustics, and drones. This achievement marks a major leap forward in the renewable energy and urban solutions sectors, addressing urgent global challenges such as providing clean energy efficiently, reducing urban noise pollution, and supporting sustainable development. These inventions reflect the university's commitment to advancing research and development in sustainable energy.
The 2024 four patents hold transformative potential for renewable energy solutions and urban noise reduction. The "Wind Turbine Blade with Self-Adaptive Tip-Sweep” is designed to enhance energy capture and efficiently manage stress under varying wind speeds. This innovative blade design autonomously adjusts to changes in wind speed and direction, improving performance without the need for complex control systems.
Dr. Akhter has also developed and patented the “Aerofoil Module for Propeller and Turbine Blades with Passive Variable Air Passage Cover”, a novel aerodynamic technology that optimizes airflow adaptation, ensuring smooth and efficient energy conversion even in fluctuating conditions. Another breakthrough is the “Wind Turbine Blade Having Air Passage with Air Cleaning Member” which combines clean energy generation with environmental remediation by filtering ambient air during blade rotation, thereby improving air quality.
In the field of aeroacoustics, Dr. Akhter has patented an innovative acoustic landing pad for drones. This platform minimizes ground-effect noise during drone operations, providing a valuable solution for urban environments. It addresses rising concerns about noise pollution from the increasing use of drones, promoting harmony with urban landscapes and populated areas.
“These patents are the culmination of dedication and passion,” stated Dr. Akhter. “I hope these innovations contribute to building a more sustainable and efficient future. It is an honor to be part of advancing renewable energy technologies, driven by a commitment to progress and innovation in the UAE. I have been passionate about developing wind energy technologies and drones for many years, and I am delighted that my efforts have resulted in these patents. I look forward to collaborating with industry partners to commercialize these technologies on a larger scale and help achieve the UAE’s sustainability goals.”
Dr. Akhter and his PhD supervisor Dr. Farag Omar envision broad applications for these inventions in the future. Their adaptive turbine blades have the potential to redefine efficiency standards for large-scale wind farms, while the noise-reduction platform could greatly benefit urban drone delivery systems and other innovative services.
These patents represent significant contributions to sustainable technology and highlight UAEU’s commitment to achieving environmental and technological goals. Dr. Akhter’s work sets a new benchmark in renewable energy and urban solutions, reflecting UAEU's leadership and the UAE’s prominence in these critical fields.
