The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) demonstrated its unwavering commitment to sustainability and global collaboration through its active participation in COP29 in Azerbaijan, reaffirming its strong commitment to achieving sustainable development and addressing global environmental challenges. The university's participation focused on showcasing its innovative research projects that contribute to the development of renewable energy technologies, improving resources efficiency, and sustainable agriculture, in addition to promoting international cooperation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The university's participation was marked by organizing the "Cultivating Change" symposium as part of the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Initiative for Empowering African Women in Rural Areas. This symposium, conducted in collaboration with Haramaya University (Ethiopia) and Gaston Berger University (Senegal), spotlighted the critical role of women in agricultural research and sustainable farming practices. Researchers from UAEU and partner institutions shared progress on joint projects that aim to transform rural agricultural systems through innovative and inclusive approaches.

In his opening address, H.E. Prof. Ahmed Ali Alraeesi, Acting Vice Chancellor of UAEU and head of the university's delegation at COP29, underscored UAEU's pivotal role in leveraging scientific research and innovation to advance global sustainability. "International academic collaboration is indispensable for tackling environmental challenges and achieving the SDGs. Through our global partnerships, we aim to create a profound and lasting impact," he remarked.

Additionally, the university showcased its commitment to sustainability and innovation through four significant events.

First, UAEU announced the winners of the UAEU- Baku Engineering University SDG Research Program during the bilateral meeting at Baku Engineering University, recognizing groundbreaking research tackling climate change and sustainability challenges, inspiring transformative solutions for a sustainable future.

Second, the UAEU collaborated with Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University to launch a joint SDG Research Program. This initiative focuses on renewable energy, industrial innovation, and climate action, with a direct emphasis on SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Third, UAEU and Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University co-hosted a panel discussion exploring innovative approaches to integrating renewable energy solutions with clean water management systems. The session featured contributions from academic leaders from both institution and industry experts, highlighting strategies to enhance agricultural productivity while ensuring sustainability.

Lastly, the university participated in a workshop organised under the UAE Climate Network, focusing on innovative models for sustainable urban planning and cities that adapt to climate change. The event underscored the potential of urban development strategies in mitigating environmental impacts while fostering resilience.

Through its participation at COP29, United Arab Emirates University reaffirmed its role in enhancing the academic presence of the UAE in international forums, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to leading research and innovation initiatives that contribute to building a more sustainable future and solidifying its leadership position in the global academic landscape.
