Day of the White Cane

 

The Special Education Department in the College of Education at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in collaboration with Al Ain Rehabilitation Center of Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs organized on November 2nd, 2015 an event entitled the "Day of the White Cane" in solidarity with the International Day for the Blind, which is celebrated every year during the month of October. The Dean of the Faculty of Education (Professor Oliver) opened the ceremony. Al Ain Rehabilitation Center of Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs orient the students on how to write in braille and use the white cane. The Center has also displayed a number of printed books that translated into braille. The event includes various activities, which were organized by the Special Education Department students including the experience of using the White Cane, writing their names in braille. Additionally, Special Education students created brochures displaying information on how to write Arabic and English numbers and letters in braille. And the event was concluded with the College of Education dean honoring Al Ain Rehabilitation Center of Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs for their partnership and active participation.
