UAE leads the way in Sustainable Development
The UAEU Center for Public Policy and Leadership hosted a lecture last week titled Sustainable Development by World Bank Group Senior Vice President for the 2030 Development Agenda, United Nations Relations, and Partnerships, Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin.
Dr Mohieldin illustrated the reality of sustainable development across the world using international statistics and United Nations measurement indicators. He discussed the challenges facing it, and the applications of sustainable development programs presented by the World Bank Group. He also highlighted some successful and less successful experiences he had encountered in adhering to the goals and requirements of sustainable development.
He said that the priorities and objectives of sustainable development agreed upon
in accordance with international conventions have been subject to significant changes
from 2015 to the present. International attention has emerged in achieving the goals
of the new millennium. The UAE is one of the first countries to contribute to, and
implement sustainable development policies. It has promoted the concepts of human
development and a knowledge-based economy, and has made significant efforts in the
development and investment of renewable energy, enhancing the quality of education,
diversifying sources of income, using and developing technology, including information
technology, to promote this global trend, and is at the forefront of successful countries
realizing sustainability through its policies and Vision 2021, and to maintain economic
and social development, and preserve natural resources for future generations, according
to the 2030 World Vision.
At the end of the lecture, there was discussion about the requirements and challenges of the reality and ambitions of the Arab and Middle East countries, and how to guide public policies to maintain natural resources through scientific research and how to strengthen the national development plans of the countries, ensuring the stability and development of resources to preserve them for future generations.
